Cooperation between Hunan Cancer Hospital and Medical School of University of Minnesota

Invited by the Masonic Cancer Center and University of Minnesota Medical School, USA, President ZHOU Xiao and Vice President LIANG Jian-ping delegation paid a visit and signed a memorandum for further cooperation on May 21-22.

University of Minnesota is one of America's most prestigious comprehensive universities, ranking the third among all public universities in the United States. Founded in 1888, its medical school owns the world leading level of research on diabetes, heart transplantation, cancer treatment, stem cell transplantation, and children' diseases. Masonic Cancer Research Center has very strong basic and clinical research capabilities, and has been among the best in recent years in the United States National Institutes of Health-funded funds, demonstrating advanced level in the area of stem cells, bone marrow transplantation, breast cancer, bone cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, tumor molecules and discipline cytogenetics, cancer immunotherapy and cancer epidemiology. 

Dr. Tucker LeBien, Vice President of University of Minnesota Medical School warmly welcomed the delegation from Hunan Cancer Hospital and briefly introduced related departments, research and teaching. Mr. ZHOU Xiao introduced the development of Hunan Cancer Hospital, the first JCI certified cancer hospital in China, the academic strengths and clinic characteristics, and the key project construction unit of oncology clinic.

The leading scientific research ability and medical technology of our hospital, such as tumor plastics surgery and tissue engineering, combining traditional Chinese and western medicine in treatment of cancer, head and neck cancer, breast cancer and gynecological tumor, were spoken highly by peers in Minnesota Medical School.

During the visit, the delegation explored the key subjects, important laboratories and major research studies in Minnesota Medical School and Masonic Cancer Center.  They also discussed in depth with relevant personnel on scholar exchanges and training, organizing academic conferences, and conducting joint research on high incidence tumors in Hunan (lung cancer, breast cancer, nasopharynx cancer, tongue cancer, etc.). 

Mr. ZHOU Xiao and Dr. Brooks Jackson, Vice President and Dean of University of Minnesota Medical School, and Dr. Douglas Yee, director of Masonic Cancer Center, signed an agreement, opening a new page of cooperation between the hospital and Masonic Cancer Research Center as well as the University of Minnesota Medical School.
