The Double Hundred Program： A Way to Reconstruct Breasts for Breast Cancer Patients

Hunan Cancer Hospital (the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University) has started the 'Double Hundred Program', which will put one million Yuan into the reconstruction of breasts for 100 breast cancer patients.

What's the Double Hundred Program?

This special program is developed for women who choose breast reconstruction after they lost breasts after mastectomy or patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer and are about to undergo surgery. We will invest RMB 1,000,000 Yuan to the reconstruction of breasts of 100 breast cancer patients recruited across the country.

Application requirements:

(1) Patients who will undergo surgery for breast cancer, and are willing to accept breast-conservation, breast surgery or breast reconstruction after lumpectomy;

(2) Patients who have no recurrence for more than six months after operation of breast cancer and other treatments, and are willing to undertake breast-reconstruction surgery;

(3) Patients who suffer no other serious diseases, and are suitable for breast reconstruction; and

(4) Patients whose families are in financial difficulty.

How to apply:

Patients who have decided to undertake breast-reconstruction surgery should go to the Plastic Specialty Clinic of Breast Cancer.

Privileges for participations:

(1) Priority to receive expert consultations, on which basis doctors will perform the best therapeutic regimen according to the patient’s condition;

(2) Priority to get a hospital bed to be hospitalized;

(3) Priority for operation; and

(4) Subsidies for those who encounter financial difficulties. A certificate of the situation issued by the local government or authority is needed in this case. The amount of allowances will be assessed by experts of the hospital to decide if there are symptoms which show the patient is suitable for surgery. The subsidy could be collected in a lump sum after surgery.

Surgical options:

Breast reconstruction includes immediate breast reconstruction (in which breast reconstruction is performed immediately after mastectomy) and delayed breast reconstruction (go without a breast after mastectomy, focus on treatments, and research the type of surgery before breast reconstruction);, there is no absolute right or wrong choice, just a decision about which option best suits your needs. Surgeons will discuss the option with the patients and choose whether to perform immediate or delayed reconstruction once the patients are identified  as the right ones to go for surgery.

Methods for breast reconstruction:

(1) Flap reconstruction: use of tissues from other parts of the patient's body, such as the back, buttocks, thigh or abdomen. The abdominal flap for breast reconstruction is the TRAM flap (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous flap) or its technically distinct variants of microvascular "perforator flaps" like the DIEP/SIEP. These procedures are preferred by some breast cancer patients because they result in an abdominal weight loss, as well as allow the breast to be reconstructed with one's own tissues instead of a foreign implant.

(2) Breast implants.

(3) Breast implants as well as reconstruction with autogenous tissues.

(4) Breast plasty after breast-conserving operation (omentum being embeded into breasts laparoscopically, breast implants, and flap implant restoration, etc). 

(5) Autologous Fat Transfe (The possess the water-jet assisted liposuction, the most advanced equipment in the world).

(6) Nipple and areola reconstruction.

Where to get breast reconstruction done:

Hunan Cancer Hospital, having been performing breast reconstruction since 2005, is one of the few institutions where this type of surgery is carried out, thus having produced a highly qualified and efficient microsurgery team.
